Type of CHP system: Extraction from landfill
Plant owner: Co-operating municipalities
Commissioned: (reconstructed):1998 (2003)
Status of plant: Commercial
Contractor details: Waukesha/ gas engine from Zantec; Caterpillar gas engines from ?
Power generation: Gas engine
Main fuel: Landfill gas
Methane content of the landfill gas is 50-60% (on average 55%)
Nominal capacities & efficiencies:
Gross electrical output: 1,3 MWe
Net electrical output: 1,2 MWe
Heat output: 2,6 MJ/s
How is plant controlled: Based on amount & quality of gas. In case of a gas pressure being too low automatic control overrides the setpoint
Heat usage: Heating only
Energy usage: Heat I used for space heating and as process heat in waste water treatment plant
Plant description:
Landfill gas is extracted from a 20 ha landfill containing MSW and industrial waste at a rate of approx. 1200m3/hr. After desulphurisation the landfill gas is combusted in two CHP units.
Engine:
Engine 1: Waukesha/Zantec 630 HK 16 cylinder 1500 rpm stationary engine, connected to a 0.69 MWe generator. Engine 2: Caterpillar G3512 12 cylinder 1500 rpm connected to a 0.625 MW generator.
